FAQs

There are many questions people have in regard to their health and Chiropractic, here are a few of the common questions we get. If we haven’t answered your questions here please call or email us, we will only be too happy to help.

What is subluxation?

A vertebral subluxation occurs in the spine when a vertebrae loses motion and interferes with the nerves, this can then interfere with the function of organs, with muscle balance and with the sensory nerves which cause pain. You do not always know whether or not you have a subluxation because they don’t always cause pain, therefore pain is not a good indication of whether or not your body is functioning properly.

What causes a subluxation?

The body is always able to resist certain stressors when it is functioning at optimal levels, however over a period of time the body can no longer deal with these stressors and start to cause damage to your body and health. There are three types of stressors:

PHYSICAL STRESS: any falls or car accidents can cause subluxations, the birthing process itself can cause subluxations. Sitting and standing incorrectly and poor sleeping postures.

CHEMICAL STRESS: includes preservatives and additives, poolutants smoking and alcohol. Also too much toxins within our house and what we put on our skin. These upset body chemistry which disrupt the tone of both muscles and ligaments resulting in subluxation.

MENTAL STRESS: occur because of relationship or work stressors causing ligaments and muscles to tighten, and if sustained our body under goes significant physiological changes.

What does a chiropractic adjustment entail?

There are different ways to adjust the spine, within our training we are trained to use our hands to apply specific pressure to the spine to correct subluxations. We can also use an instrument called an activator that is a gentle way to correct subluxations and is great to use on children and older people. We use specifically designed tables to also help us adjust the spine. After years of training and clinical experience, each chiropractic doctor becomes highly skilled in the delivery of a variety of adjusting approaches.

What causes that noise?

The popping noise that is sometimes associated with certain techniques is due to gas (80% carbon dioxide), rushing into to fill a partial vacuum created when the joint surfaces move slightly. Some techniques will produce no sound at all.

How will I feel after an adjustment?

It varies the way people feel after an adjustment, some people can feel energized and different straight away, other people can feel light headed and dizzy and tired, all will pass and all responses are normal while your body is adjusting to your new position. Some people may feel slight soreness following their first few treatments as the body begins to realign. This is usually very mild and only lasts for a short time (24-48hrs), but generally people report they the feel ’lighter’, more relaxed and sleep better.

What results can i expect?

Everyone is different and vertebral subluxations affect people in different ways, therefore the results vary. Your body has an incredible capacity to heal itself, the healthier you are the more likely your body can achieve the results it wants. Many people find they have more energy, they sleep better, have better concentration, or a greater ability to resist disease and illness. Other people find their headache, neck or back pain, significantly diminish. Most people are enjoy the success they have with chiropractic.

Does everyone need x-rays?

No. X-rays are only needed when clinically indicated, which is discovered during your history and examination. They are useful because it allows your chiropractor to see if there are any other causes to your condition which will then alter the techniques and methods we use. They are also useful to diagnose various conditions such as arthritis, scoliosis, and osteoporosis and is also used to rule out more sinister causes of spinal problems.

What happens with my health insurance?

All health insurance companies have different requirements, you need to call your insurance and find out what they need. Upon paying for your visit the reception staff will give you a receipt that you then use to claim bad through your insurance. All chiropractors here are registered with Bupa and Axa (PPP).

Is chiropractic appropriate for all ages?

Yes. At Sheen rd chiropractic we see people from all age groups. It is safe for all ages from a 1 day old where exceptionally gentle adjustments are used (the pressure you would use to test a peach for its ripeness) to 100 years old!!!!
